🛑 Route Breakdown (A–E)

A. Macclesfield Old Town

B. Walker Barn Viewpoint

C. The Cat & Fiddle Inn

D. Buxton Pavilion Gardens

E. Goyt Valley Loop Finish: Buxton Town Centre

A). Macclesfield Old Town

Your ride begins in Macclesfield’s historic Old Town — a great place to fuel up, grab a coffee, and get yourself ready for the climb ahead. The cobbled streets, old mills, and independent cafés give the town a warm, lived‑in feel. It’s also the perfect spot to check your gear, adjust your layers, and make sure your bike is ready for the ascent.

Why stop here:

  • Good cafés and bakeries
  • Easy parking
  • A gentle warm‑up before the twisties begin

Biker tip: Traffic can be tight in the centre — keep an eye out for sudden stops and pedestrians stepping out from side streets.

B). Walker Barn Viewpoint

As you leave Macclesfield and start climbing, the landscape opens up beautifully. Walker Barn is your first proper viewpoint — a chance to pull over safely, breathe in the fresh air, and take in the rolling hills stretching out in every direction.

What makes it special:

  • Wide‑open Peak District scenery
  • A safe lay‑by for photos
  • A moment to enjoy the climb

Biker tip: This section has tempting bends, but also uneven surfaces in places. Ride smooth, not fast.

C). The Cat & Fiddle Inn (Top of the Pass)

Welcome to the legendary summit. Sitting at 1,689 ft, the Cat & Fiddle Inn marks the highest point of the route and offers unbeatable views across the moors. Even if you’re not stopping for food, it’s worth pulling in just to take in the scenery and feel the wind rush across the plateau.

Why bikers love it:

  • Iconic stop with a long history
  • Huge views across the moorland
  • A natural meeting point for riders

Biker tip: This stretch has historically been one of the UK’s most monitored roads. Watch your speed, especially on the descent toward Buxton.

D). Buxton Pavilion Gardens

Drop down into Buxton and you’ll find a complete change of atmosphere — from wild moorland to elegant Victorian spa town. Pavilion Gardens is a perfect mid‑ride break: peaceful, scenic, and full of places to grab a drink or snack.

Highlights:

  • Beautiful landscaped gardens
  • Cafés and toilets
  • A relaxing place to stretch your legs

Biker tip: The descent into Buxton can be steep with tight bends. Take it steady and enjoy the ride.

E). Goyt Valley Loop

Before finishing the run, take a detour through the Goyt Valley — one of the most beautiful pockets of the Peak District. Expect reservoirs, woodland, open moorland, and quiet roads that feel made for slow, scenic riding.

Why it’s worth the detour:

  • Stunning reservoir views
  • Quiet, atmospheric roads
  • A peaceful contrast to the main pass

Biker tip: Some sections are narrow with gravel patches. Ride with caution and enjoy the scenery.

🏁 Finish: Buxton Town Centre

End your ride back in Buxton, where you can refuel both yourself and the bike. The town is full of pubs, cafés, and shops — or, if you’re not done yet, you can loop back for round two.

📏 Total Distance & Recommended Duration

  • Approx distance: 22–30 miles depending on detours
  • Recommended duration: 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, including stops
  • Best for: Scenic riding, photography, slow exploration

Taking it slow gives you time to enjoy the views, stop for photos, and really appreciate the landscape. The Cat & Fiddle isn’t a route to rush — it’s one to savour.
