When it comes to Halloween movies, it always seems to be difficult to find a decent list of the best ones. I’m referring to family movies not mess your head up horrors here!
So, below is my family favourites and a brief description of them. I would love to hear your favourites, if they differ or whether or not you love these choices.
10). The Simpsons Tree House of Horrors
Okay, okay, I know. It's not a film but The Simpsons Tree house of Terror has been a tradition in our house for years. Episodes are funny, creepy, disgusting and cleverly written to keep us coming back for more. Not a film but loved by all the family and that's the only reason it comes in at 10.
9). Corpses Bride
Tim Burton redefines gothic romance in the stop-motion tale of an undead bride and her still-breathing groom. Johnny Depp plays Victor in this genius Halloween love story. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a go.
8). Disney's Halloweentown
I had not even heard of this film until recently. When we were looking for a film to watch one Halloween my oldest daughter said try Halloweentown. Halloweentown? Okay! A 13 year old girl jumps aboard her Grans bus and ends up in Halloweentown where she learns that she is a witch. She then must use her powers to help rescue the town. Great seasonal film from the 1980's.
This friendly ghost from this 90's movie is a brilliant family movie. A story about a young girl and her Dad who move into a mansion, only to find that it is haunted. Casper falls in love with the girl and must stop her evil, ghostly uncles from ruining things and scaring the pair away. Really nice film.
6). The Addams Family
The Addams Family characters have traditionally included Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama, their butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing, and Gomez's Cousin Itt. My favourite was always Thing. A funny, odd film that is a nice Halloween watch.
5). Nightmare before Christmas
The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world." When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life -- he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry. Although it is a Halloween movie I do still consider it to be a nice Christmas film which is why it isn't higher up the rankings.
3). Hotel Transylvania
Hilarious, cute Halloween film. A human stumbles upon a hotel for monsters. On one special weekend, Dracula invites creatures like the Invisible Man, the Mummy and others to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez). However, an unforeseen complication unfolds when human unwittingly crashes the party and falls in love with Mavis.
2). The Witches
AMAZING 90's film! A story of a boy, turned into to a mouse by an evil witch and his attempt to stop these witches turning all children into mouses. He has the help of his Gran and a friend. Starring Rowan Atkinson.
