About Balmoral Castle

Prince Albert purchased the estate and its original castle from the Farquharson family in 1852. The old house soon proved too small, so a new castle was commissioned from William Smith of Aberdeen, with designs amended by Albert himself.

The castle stands near Crathie, 9 miles west of Ballater and 50 miles west of Aberdeen. It is the private property of King Charles III rather than part of the Crown Estate, so check the official website for any visitor access.
