About Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle is a Grade I listed country house first built in 1679 and largely reworked in the 1840s. It sits on a 5,000-acre estate in Highclere, Hampshire, about five miles south of Newbury and nine and a half miles north of Andover.

The Victorian makeover was the work of architect Charles Barry, who gave the house its Jacobethan and Italianate look. The surrounding park was laid out by Capability Brown in the 18th century. Highclere remains the country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon, part of the Anglo-Welsh Herbert family.
