About Holyrood Abbey
Holyrood Abbey was founded in 1128 by David I of Scotland for the Canons Regular. In the 15th century its guesthouse grew into a royal residence, and after the Scottish Reformation that residence was enlarged into the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which still stands beside the ruins.
The abbey church served as a parish church until the 17th century but has stood in ruins since the 18th century. Its surviving walls sit next to the palace at the eastern end of the Royal Mile, and the site is protected as a scheduled monument.
