About Jane Austen’s House Museum

Jane Austen's House is a small independent museum in the village of Chawton, near Alton in Hampshire. It occupies the 17th-century house where the novelist lived for the last eight years of her life, and the building has been Grade I listed since 1963.

This was a remarkably productive home. During her time here Austen wrote, revised and readied all six of her novels for print, and she also worked on the unfinished fragment Sanditon. For readers, it offers a rare chance to see the setting where some of the best-loved books in English took their final shape.
