About Linlithgow Palace
The ruins of Linlithgow Palace stand in the town of Linlithgow, West Lothian, 15 miles west of Edinburgh. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was one of the principal residences of the monarchs of Scotland, a royal palace at the heart of the kingdom's court life.
Although it was maintained after Scotland's monarchs left for England in 1603, the palace was little used, and it was burned out in 1746. Today the roofless ruins are a visitor attraction in the care of Historic Environment Scotland, giving a vivid sense of its former grandeur.
