About Raphoe Castle

Raphoe Castle, also called the Bishop's Palace, stands in ruins on the edge of Raphoe in County Donegal. It was built in the 1630s for John Leslie, Church of Ireland Bishop of Raphoe, using stone taken from a ruined round tower.

Its history is a turbulent one. Bishop Leslie was besieged here during the 1641 Rebellion until the Laggan Army relieved him, and the castle surrendered in 1650 during the Cromwellian conquest. It was damaged again in 1689 by supporters of King James II during the Williamite War.
