About Royal Hospital Chelsea

The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a retirement and nursing home for around 300 British Army veterans. King Charles II founded it in 1682 as an almshouse, using the old meaning of the word hospital. It occupies a 66-acre site on Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea.

The residents are known as Chelsea Pensioners. The hospital is an independent charity that relies partly on donations to fund the care and housing of veterans. Its gardens are Grade II listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
