About SS Great Britain
SS Great Britain was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. From 1845 to 1853 she was the largest passenger ship in the world, and she is now a museum ship in Bristol.
Iron hulls and screw propellers had been tried before, but Great Britain was the first large ocean-going ship to bring the two together, putting her at the cutting edge of technology. In 1845 she became the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, completing the voyage in 14 days.
