About Sutton Hoo
Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge in Suffolk, is the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries from the 6th and 7th centuries. Excavations have continued since 1938, when an undisturbed ship burial filled with treasures was discovered. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in England.
The site was first excavated by Basil Brown, a self-taught archaeologist, for landowner Edith Pretty, before national experts took over. Sutton Hoo sheds light on Anglo-Saxon culture during a period with very few written records. Their story is one of the great tales of British archaeology.
