About Talyllyn Railway

The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow-gauge line in Wales running for seven and a quarter miles from Tywyn on the Mid-Wales coast to Nant Gwernol near Abergynolwyn. It opened in 1865 to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarries down to Tywyn.

It was the first narrow-gauge railway in Britain authorised by Act of Parliament to carry passengers using steam. Despite years of underinvestment the line stayed open, and in 1951 it became the world's first railway preserved as a heritage line by volunteers.
