About Warwick Castle
Warwick Castle began as a wooden motte-and-bailey fort built by William the Conqueror in 1068, overlooking the River Avon. It was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. Its position above the Avon made it a commanding stronghold in the heart of England, and its medieval walls still dominate the town's skyline.
During the Hundred Years War, the side facing the town was refortified, creating one of the most recognisable examples of 14th-century military architecture. The castle remained a stronghold until the early 17th century, when James I granted it to Sir Fulke Greville in 1604.
