About Wistman’s Wood

Wistman's Wood is one of the best-known ancient temperate rainforests in Britain and one of only a few high-altitude oakwoods still surviving on Dartmoor in Devon. Its remote setting adds to its atmosphere. Its rare survival on the high moor makes it a special place for walkers and anyone who loves old woodland.

The wood is first mentioned in writing in the 17th century, but tree-ring studies suggest that some individual trees may be many hundreds of years old. It is a memorable place for walkers who want to see one of Dartmoor's oldest natural landscapes.
