Salzburg
Arrive, settle in and explore the historic centre, Mirabell Gardens and the Salzach riverfront before the driving begins.
Wolfgangsee to Hallstatt
Enter the Salzkammergut, pause at St Wolfgang and follow the lakes toward an evening arrival in Hallstatt.
Gosausee to Zell am See
See Hallstatt early, detour beneath the Dachstein at Gosausee and continue into bigger mountain country.
Grossglockner to Heiligenblut
Climb through Alpine hairpins, stop at Fuscher Törl and Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, then descend toward one of Austria’s classic mountain villages.
Heiligenblut to Innsbruck

Alpbach to Salzburg
Return east with room for one final lakeside or village stop before closing the loop in Salzburg.
Begin without rushing.
Salzburg deserves more than a collection point. Walk the UNESCO-listed centre, cross the Salzach and look up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. If you arrive after a flight or long rail journey, collect the car only when you need it.
Wolfgangsee, Hallstatt and Gosausee.
Blue water, green slopes and graceful lakeside villages introduce the route. Hallstatt is at its best early or late; its centre is largely car-free, so use signed visitor parking.
Give Gosausee enough time to slow the day down. On a clear day the lake frames the Dachstein massif beautifully.
A lake beneath the Hohe Tauern.
The landscape grows larger as the route reaches Zell am See. Stay near the water or choose a practical base with confirmed parking before the biggest driving day.
The road you came to Austria to drive.
The 48 km scenic road climbs through pastures and high mountain terrain. Stop at signed viewpoints, consider the Edelweiss-Spitze spur when conditions allow, and never hurry the descent.
Marmots may appear near Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Keep your distance and never feed wildlife.
Innsbruck and Alpbach.
Innsbruck puts a historic city directly beneath the mountains. Alpbach then changes the mood completely: timber houses, meadows and a final slow evening before the return to Salzburg.

The official road is open again from 25 April 2026, with operating hours changing through the season. Conditions can still close it.
Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need a vignette for most Austrian motorways and expressways. Some special routes charge separately.
One-day and ten-day digital vignettes can have immediate validity. Consumer purchases of longer products can have an 18-day delay.
Drive on the right, use signed viewpoints, carry warm waterproof layers and never stop on a bend for a photograph.
The Grossglockner closes for winter. A winter version needs a different route plus full checks for tyres, chains and local conditions.
