History

A castle with a remarkable story

Château d’Urspelt sits on a hillside in the Our Nature Park, in the green and wooded Éislek region of northern Luxembourg. The castle you see today was built in the 1860s on the remains of a much older structure, and the well on the site is said to date back to the 11th century.

Its most dramatic chapter came during the Second World War. German forces used the castle as their headquarters for northern Luxembourg until they abandoned it to the Americans during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944, when it became a US command post. After the war it was left damaged and empty, before a major restoration brought it back to life. Today it is a National Monument of Luxembourg, and in 2016 a new wing was added to the historic building.

Spa

The cave spa

The castle’s NUXE spa is the reason this break stands out. Its pool is designed around an underwater-grotto theme, which is why it’s often called a “cave spa”, and it’s the perfect place to unwind after a cold day outdoors.

The spa menu includes massages designed with a physiotherapist and a newly added head spa ritual. Treatments are booked separately, so reserve them ahead if you’re travelling on a busy weekend.

Stay

Rooms and suites

  • Castle rooms and Superior rooms for two, mixing historic character with modern comfort
  • Executive Suites sleeping up to four, with two bedrooms

Eating at the castle

The restaurant serves modern French cooking every evening from 6pm, and tables are by reservation only, so book when you confirm your stay. Mornings start with a breakfast buffet, and there’s a bar, lounge and terrace for a drink before dinner.
