Two famous waterfall parks and a coast that keeps getting better.
Plitvice and Krka are the natural headliners, but this never becomes seven days of chasing waterfalls. Zagreb gives the journey a proper beginning, Zadar brings you out to the sea and the final run through old Dalmatian towns becomes more relaxed as the driving gets shorter.
The extra night near Plitvice is important. It gives the lakes a full day instead of forcing you to arrive, rush a crowded boardwalk and leave again. By the time you reach Split, the car can be returned and the final day enjoyed entirely on foot.

The distances become easier as the week progresses. That is deliberate: the route begins with the longer inland stages and finishes with short coastal hops and a final day without the car.
Zagreb
Arrive in Zagreb and leave the car parked. Walk through the Lower Town, Dolac Market and Upper Town, then find St Mark’s Church and the viewpoints around Gradec. Zagreb earns its place because it makes the waterfalls feel like a journey rather than an airport transfer.
Stay: central Zagreb, ideally with parking or close to a public garage.
Zagreb to Plitvice
Allow roughly two hours before stops. Rastoke, near Slunj, is the worthwhile detour: old watermills and small cascades make a gentle introduction to what comes next. Continue to your Plitvice base and collect food or supplies before the early start.
Stay: near Entrance 1 for the classic Lower Lakes start, or Entrance 2 for Upper Lakes access.
Plitvice Lakes
Book a timed ticket for the entrance you actually intend to use. Programme C starts at Entrance 1 and covers the Lower and Upper Lakes in about 8 km and four to five hours, combining walking with an electric boat and the panoramic vehicle. Strong walkers can consider K1, a 16.5 km circuit taking six to eight hours.
Boardwalks can be wet and busy, so wear footwear with grip and start early. Swimming, leaving marked paths and flying drones are not allowed. Dogs are permitted on a lead.
Plitvice to Zadar
Swap forest and waterfalls for the Adriatic. Arrive with time for the Roman Forum, St Donatus Church and the lanes of the old town, then finish at the waterfront by the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun.
Stay: inside the old town for atmosphere, or just outside the peninsula for easier parking.
Zadar to Krka and Šibenik
Drive to Krka’s Lozovac entrance for the simplest car-based visit and free official visitor parking. Follow the loop around Skradinski buk, then continue to Šibenik for the old streets, waterfront and, if time allows, the view from St Michael’s Fortress.
Šibenik to Trogir and Split
It is only about 45 km to Trogir, so there is no need to rush. Park outside the tiny historic core and wander across the bridges and narrow lanes before continuing roughly 30 km to Split. Return the hire car here if later island plans do not require it.
Stay: Split for two nights; look beyond the palace walls for simpler parking and better value.
Split
Explore Diocletian’s Palace early, follow the Riva and give yourself time to get lost in the old streets. Later, walk towards Marjan or simply stop for a long meal. Split works best as a living city, not a checklist at the end of the route.
Extra day: add an island trip or a slower beach day before flying home.
