Why go

Why Djerba works for winter sun

Djerba is a flat, sunny island off southern Tunisia, ringed by sandy beaches and dotted with olive groves, palms and low white houses. In winter it’s quiet and relaxed, and the flight from Manchester is only about three and a half hours.

Most resort hotels sit on the north-east coast around Midoun and Sidi Mahrez beach, and many have a hammam and an indoor pool, which matters when the sea is too cool for most people. Beyond the hotels you’ll find a lively market town, a famous synagogue, a street-art village, pottery workshops and, on the mainland, Star Wars film locations.

What’s the weather like in winter?

Mild and bright rather than hot. Typical average daytime highs are roughly 21°C in November, 17°C in December, 16°C in January and February and 18°C in March. Evenings are cooler, so pack a jumper or light jacket.

FCDO travel advice

Djerba is not one of the areas the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against visiting. But its Tunisia travel advice (updated 24 July 2026 and still current on 13 October 2026) contains serious warnings, so read it in full:

  • Terrorism: the FCDO says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia, including at religious sites, tourist sites, festivals and on public transport. It highlights a 2023 shooting at a Jewish pilgrimage site on Djerba in which 3 security personnel and 2 civilians were killed. A state of emergency has been in place since 2015.
  • Libyan border: the FCDO advises against all travel to Ben Guerdane and its surroundings, the militarised zone south of El Borma and Dhehiba, and within 20km of the border north of Dhehiba. It advises against all but essential travel within 75km of the border, including Remada (Zarzis, the C118 road and Medenine Governorate north of that road are excluded). See the regional risks page.
  • Western Tunisia: further advised-against areas lie near the Algerian border, including the Chaambi Mountains and Kasserine Governorate, a long way from Djerba.
  • Protests: these can start with little warning, often at weekends and on national dates including 17 December and 14 January. Avoid them.
  • Insurance: your cover could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice, which matters if you plan a trip into the far south.

The safety and security page also notes that same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Tunisia. Sign up for FCDO email alerts to hear about changes before you fly.

Entry rules for UK passport holders

The FCDO’s entry requirements page says British passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 90 days, and your passport should be valid for your whole stay. Smart glasses and walkie-talkies (even toy ones) can be confiscated on arrival, and drones are illegal without authorisation, so leave them at home.

The dinar is a closed currency

Tunisia has strict currency controls. You are not allowed to take dinars out of the country, and you should check whether you need to declare foreign currency, including sterling, on arrival, as undeclared cash can be confiscated. Keep any declaration form and official exchange receipts. So get dinars after you land and spend them before you fly home.

  • Houmt SoukThe island’s main town is a maze of souks selling rugs, spices, leather and pottery, with cafés, a harbour and the seafront fort, Borj El Kebir. Mornings are busiest. Browse Houmt Souk tours.
  • El Ghriba synagogueIn the village of Erriadh, El Ghriba is famous for its striking blue tiles and is still an active place of worship. Expect security checks, cover shoulders and knees, and check opening times with your hotel or guide first, as visits are affected by the Sabbath (Saturday) and Jewish holidays.
  • Djerbahood street artAlso in Erriadh, this open-air gallery brought around 150 artists from 30 countries to paint some 250 murals. Some have faded, but it’s a great wander and pairs neatly with El Ghriba. See Djerbahood tours.
  • Guellala pottery villageOn the south coast, Guellala is Djerba’s pottery village, where you can watch potters at work and buy souvenirs. The heritage museum above the village covers island traditions; check it’s open before you go.
  • Ras Rmel (Flamingo Island)Boat trips head out from Houmt Souk to this sandy spit, usually with lunch included. Flamingo sightings depend on season and luck, and winter sailings depend on weather and demand. Compare Flamingo Island trips.

How to get to Djerba from the UK

Direct flights this winter

easyJet flies direct to Djerba-Zarzis (DJE) from Manchester and London Luton, taking about 3 hours 35 minutes. Manchester flights show on Tuesdays and Saturdays through November and December 2026, leaving early afternoon and landing early evening. Luton is also around twice a week. Returns for a week in early December were showing from about £83 per person when this guide was written: a from price that changes constantly, before hold luggage.

Don’t expect TUI or Jet2 flights to Djerba this winter. TUI has announced twice-weekly Gatwick to Djerba flights from summer 2027, and Jet2’s Tunisia flights from May 2027 go to Enfidha, far to the north. Search Manchester to Djerba or Luton to Djerba (example dates, change them to suit).

Connecting via Tunis or Europe

From other UK airports, you can fly to Tunis (Tunisair flies from London Gatwick) and connect to a domestic flight, or connect through a European hub such as Lyon, Marseille or Paris. Allow a sensible connection time and book on one ticket if you can.

From the airport to your hotel

The airport is about 30km from the Midoun tourist zone, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by road. Most people use a hotel or package transfer or a taxi; agree the fare or check the meter is on before setting off. You can hire a car, but taxis and organised trips cover the island well. Compare car hire at Djerba-Zarzis airport.

Money-saving tips

  • Half board or all-inclusive? All-inclusive adds lunch, snacks and local drinks. If you’d have two or three drinks a day, it often pays for itself. If not, or if you’ll be out on trips, half board plus lunch in town is usually better value.
  • Book early for peak weeks: Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the dearest winter dates, and with only around two flights a week from each airport, the best days sell first.
  • Compare a package with DIY: packages bundle flights and hotel with ATOL protection. When this guide was written, one major tour operator showed 7 nights at the Sidi Mansour from Manchester in early December from about £206 per person including local fees, with bags and transfers extra. Price the same dates yourself.
  • Check what the spa includes: hammam access and treatments are often extra, so ask about packages rather than paying one by one.
  • Change money little and often: you can’t take dinars home, so change small amounts, keep receipts and spend what’s left before the airport.
  • Shop around for trips: compare the hotel excursion desk with online tours.
