About Antonine Wall

The Romans built this turf wall on stone foundations about twenty years after Hadrian's Wall, intending it to replace the older frontier further south. It ran between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth.

While it was garrisoned, it marked the northern edge of the Roman Empire. The wall was about 3 metres high and 5 metres wide, with a deep ditch on its northern side for extra security. Lidar scans have helped researchers study its length and the Roman measurements used.
