About Auckland Castle

Also called Auckland Palace, this former bishop's palace was a residence of the Bishops of Durham from around 1183 and their main home from 1832 until 2012. That year, the castle and its contents were sold to the Auckland Castle Trust.

It now welcomes visitors while still housing the bishop's offices. Its chapel is the highlight, once the medieval great hall and remodelled by Bishop John Cosin between 1661 and 1665, and praised as one of the finest rooms in North East England.
