About Durham Castle

Durham Castle is a Norman castle in the city of Durham, standing on a hill above the River Wear on the city's peninsula, facing Durham Cathedral. It was once the residence of the Bishops of Durham, and since 1837 it has been occupied by University College, Durham.

Together with the cathedral, the castle has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. Because it is still a working building and home to over 100 students, the public can visit only on guided tours. Booking a tour is the way to see inside this historic building.
