About Beeston Castle
Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, built the castle in the 1220s after returning from the Crusades. Henry III took it over in 1237, and it was kept in good order until the 16th century, when it was judged no longer useful militarily.
The castle saw action again in 1643 during the English Civil War, before being slighted in 1646 on Cromwell's orders so it could not be used again. Its lofty position still gives it a commanding presence over the surrounding countryside.
