About Big Ben

Strictly, Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Bell of the Great Clock of Westminster, though it is widely used for the tower too. The tower, once simply the Clock Tower, was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

Designed by Augustus Pugin and Sir Charles Barry in the Perpendicular Gothic style, it was completed in 1859. The clock strikes on five bells, and the stone carvings include symbols of the four nations of the UK and the Tudor dynasty.
