About Churchill War Rooms

The Churchill War Rooms is one of the five branches of the Imperial War Museum. It brings together the Cabinet War Rooms, an underground complex that served as a British government command centre throughout the Second World War, and the Churchill Museum, which explores the life of Winston Churchill.

Work on the Cabinet War Rooms beneath the Treasury building in Whitehall began in 1938. They became fully operational on 27 August 1939, one week before Britain declared war on Germany, and were used through the rest of the conflict.
