About Burghley House

Built in the 16th century by the senior branch of the Cecil family, who still live there, Burghley is a leading example of the showy Elizabethan prodigy house. It is Grade I listed, and its exterior keeps much of its original Elizabethan character.

Inside, most rooms were remodelled before 1800, and the house opens to the public seasonally with a route through grand, richly furnished state apartments. Outside, the park was designed by Capability Brown, so allow time to enjoy the landscape as well as the interiors.
