About Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic Revival mansion in Cardiff city centre. Norman invaders built the original motte and bailey in the late 11th century on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort, commissioned either by William the Conqueror or by Robert Fitzhamon.

The castle was the heart of the medieval town of Cardiff and of the Marcher lordship of Glamorgan. In the 12th century it began to be rebuilt in stone, probably by Robert of Gloucester, who added a shell keep and strong defensive walls.
