About Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship built in 1869 on the River Leven at Dumbarton, Scotland, for the Jock Willis Shipping Line. She was one of the last tea clippers built and one of the quickest, the product of a long period of design development before steamships took over the trade routes.

Her name comes from Robert Burns's 1791 poem Tam o' Shanter, in which a witch called Cutty Sark, dressed only in a short shift, chases Tam on his horse and catches its tail at the Brig o' Doon. Today the ship is a striking sight in Greenwich.
