About Royal Observatory
The Royal Observatory sits on a hill in Greenwich Park in south-east London, looking north over the River Thames. It played a major part in the history of astronomy and navigation, and because the Prime Meridian passes through it, it gave its name to Greenwich Mean Time.
The observatory holds the IAU observatory code 000, the very first on the international list. Together with the National Maritime Museum, the Queen's House and the clipper ship Cutty Sark, it makes up Royal Museums Greenwich, so it pairs naturally with a wider day exploring Greenwich.
