About Doe Castle

Doe Castle, known in Irish as Caisleán na dTuath, stands near Creeslough in County Donegal. It was the historic stronghold of Clan tSuibhne and was built in the early 15th century, with design features that closely echo the tower houses found across the water in Scotland.

The castle occupies a small peninsula with water on three sides and a moat cut into the rock on the landward side. High outer walls enclose an inner bawn and a four-storey tower house, making it one of the finer fortified sites in north-west Ireland.

Highlights

  • Stronghold of Clan tSuibhne
  • Moat cut into the rock on the landward side
  • Four-storey tower house inside high walls
  • Outdoor, best on a dry day
