About Eboracum
Eboracum began as a fort and later became a city in the Roman province of Britannia. At its height it was the largest town in the north of the province and served as a provincial capital. It stands on the site of present-day York.
People kept living here after the Western Roman Empire declined, and the settlement grew into the city of York in North Yorkshire. Two Roman emperors died at Eboracum: Septimius Severus in 211 AD and Constantius Chlorus in 306 AD. Traces of its Roman past help explain how York began.
