About York Castle
York Castle is a fortified complex in the city of York, made up of a series of castles, prisons, law courts and other buildings constructed over the past nine centuries on the north-west side of the River Foss. Together they tell the story of justice and power in York.
It was first built on the orders of William the Conqueror to control the former Viking city of Jórvík. After a turbulent early history it became a major fortification with extensive water defences. The ruined keep of the Norman castle is known as Clifford's Tower.
