About Fort George

Fort George is a large 18th-century fortress near Ardersier, north-east of Inverness. It was built to control the Highlands after the Jacobite rising of 1745, replacing an earlier Fort George in Inverness that had been put up after the 1715 rising.

The fortress has never been attacked and has been in continuous use as a garrison ever since. Its star-shaped design survives almost unchanged. Visitors can see exhibits and facsimiles showing how the fort was used in different periods, while it still functions as an army barracks.
