About Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle is a ruined castle beside Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, on the A82 about 21 kilometres southwest of Inverness and two kilometres east of Drumnadrochit. It is a scheduled monument and received 466,420 visitors in 2025. Its lochside setting is one of its greatest appeals.
The ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, on the site of an earlier medieval fort. Urquhart played a part in the Wars of Scottish Independence, later became a royal castle, and was raided several times by the MacDonald Earls of Ross.
