About Isle of May

The Isle of May sits around eight kilometres off the Scottish mainland in the northern part of the outer Firth of Forth. It is roughly 1.5 kilometres long and half a kilometre wide, and it is owned and run by NatureScot as a national nature reserve. Nobody lives there permanently today.

In the Middle Ages the island was home to St Adrian's Priory. Most visitors now come for the day by ferry, either from Anstruther in Fife or from Dunbar or North Berwick. The bird observatory can also host up to six people, who usually stay for about a week at a time.

Highlights

  • National nature reserve managed by NatureScot
  • Ferries from Anstruther, Dunbar or North Berwick
  • Site of the medieval St Adrian's Priory
  • Outdoor, best on a dry day
