About RRS Discovery

RRS Discovery is a barque-rigged auxiliary steamship built in Dundee, Scotland, specifically for Antarctic research. She was launched in 1901 and was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built anywhere in the United Kingdom, marking the end of an era in British shipbuilding.

Her first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, better known as the Discovery Expedition. She carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first journey to the Antarctic, a voyage that proved highly successful. Today the ship is displayed in Dundee, the city where she was built.
