About Lincoln Castle
Lincoln Castle is a major medieval castle built in Lincoln during the late 11th century by William the Conqueror, on the site of a pre-existing Roman fortress. It is unusual in having two mottes, a feature shared by only one other castle in the country, at Lewes in East Sussex.
The castle remained in use as a prison and court into modern times, and the Crown Courts still sit here today. It is one of the better preserved castles in England and a Grade I listed building, offering visitors centuries of history in one site.
