About Monmouth Castle
Monmouth Castle stands close to the centre of Monmouth, the county town of Monmouthshire, on a hill above the River Monnow in south-east Wales. It was once an important border castle and is best known as the birthplace of King Henry V of England. It is also a scheduled monument.
During the English Civil War it changed hands three times and was then slighted so it could not be fortified again. After part of it collapsed in 1647, the site was built over by Great Castle House, later headquarters and regimental museum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers. It is Grade I listed.
