About Monnow Bridge
Monnow Bridge in Monmouth is the only surviving fortified river bridge in Great Britain with a gate tower standing on the bridge. Towers like this were once common across Europe, but most were lost to growing towns, fading defensive needs and the demands of traffic and trade.
The historical and architectural importance of the bridge, along with its rarity, is reflected in its status as both a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building. It crosses the River Monnow about 500 metres upstream of the point where the Monnow joins the River Wye.
