About Spanish City
Spanish City in Whitley Bay was built as a smaller take on Blackpool's Pleasure Beach. It opened in 1910 with a concert hall, restaurant, roof garden and tearoom. A ballroom followed in 1920, and later a permanent funfair. Today it is a dining and leisure centre near the seafront.
The building is known for its 180-foot Renaissance-style frontage and its distinctive dome, which is Grade II listed. Towers stand on either side of the entrance, each topped by a half-life-size copper figure, one with cymbals and the other with a tambourine.
