About Turbinia

Turbinia was the first steamship powered by a steam turbine. Sir Charles Algernon Parsons built her as an experimental vessel in 1894, and she was easily the fastest ship in the world at the time. Parsons's design proved the power of the steam turbine for marine use.

She made a dramatic appearance at the Spithead Navy Review in 1897 and set the standard for the next generation of steamships. Turbinia is displayed at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne, while her original engine is at the Science Museum in London.
