About Tintagel Castle
Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortification on the peninsula of Tintagel Island, next to the village of Tintagel in North Cornwall. Artefacts from the Romano-British period have been found there, although no Roman-era building has been proven. Its clifftop setting is spectacular.
In the early medieval period it was probably a seasonal residence of the regional king of Dumnonia. In the 13th century, Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall, built a castle on the site. The ruins and their wild coastal position make Tintagel one of the most atmospheric heritage sites in Cornwall.
