At a glance

Why this travel guide is worth doing

This is the closest match to the Bernina guide’s rhythm: one main railway journey, a change of landscape and enough time to enjoy the destination. Start with one night in Interlaken, cross to Montreux, then let the lake set a slower pace.

The advantage is the balance. You do not have to squeeze a different mountain attraction into every day, and two nights in Montreux keep the middle of the trip free of suitcase packing. Choose this for scenery and comfortable town-based exploring; choose a longer trip if Jungfraujoch is also essential.

The route

Interlaken Ost → Zweisimmen → Montreux → Geneva.

Where you sleep

  • Night 1: Interlaken. Choose walking distance from Interlaken Ost if it simplifies both arrival and the next morning.
  • Nights 2–3: Montreux. Stay near the station or waterfront, checking the gradient between them before booking.
  • Night 4: Geneva. Choose a station-side base for an easy onward journey.

Choose the right journey

Choose the GoldenPass Express for the direct panoramic journey. Ordinary connecting services suit travellers who value flexibility; verify the full routing rather than assuming every Interlaken–Montreux result follows the scenic line.

Book in this order

  1. Check the GoldenPass departure and reservation arrangements first, then price the Swiss transfers and four hotel nights together. Prestige has different reservation conditions; do not assume a rail pass includes every supplement.
  2. Check the complete arrival and departure journeys against the itinerary, including any airport transfer.
  3. Reserve these overnight bases: Interlaken (night 1); Montreux (nights 2–3); Geneva (night 4).
  4. Add only the optional activities that fit the free days, checking meeting points and inclusions.

What to budget for

Price entry to Switzerland, Interlaken and Geneva transfers, the GoldenPass ticket and any reservation, four hotel nights, meals and optional boat or castle tickets. Compare individual tickets with a pass only after listing the actual journeys.

Make the pace work for you

Keep Day 3 to one destination. Stay away from station-facing rooms if announcements and train noise disturb sleep.

Day 1

Interlaken · Arrival transfer depends on gateway; protect a relaxed evening.

Arrive and settle in Interlaken

Arrive early enough for a simple riverside stroll and dinner. Keep a mountain excursion off the arrival-day plan: a delayed flight should not cost you a second expensive booking. Find the station entrance you will use tomorrow and collect breakfast supplies if needed. Walk beside the Aare and keep an optional Höhematte viewpoint stroll short.

Overnight base: Interlaken

Route advice: Check whether your accommodation is nearer Interlaken Ost or West.

Parking or booking: Check the GoldenPass departure and reservation arrangements first, then price the Swiss transfers and four hotel nights together. Prestige has different reservation conditions; do not assume a rail pass includes every supplement.

Day 2

Interlaken Ost → Zweisimmen → Montreux · GoldenPass section about 3¼ hours; allow extra time for hotel transfers.

Take the GoldenPass to Montreux

Make the train the main event. Settle in for the changing landscape rather than planning a sightseeing sprint at intermediate stations. At Montreux, drop your luggage and walk a short section of the lakefront. A quiet dinner is enough after moving hotels. The lakeside promenade is the simplest first outing after check-in.

Overnight base: Montreux

Route advice: Book the correct service and class; check current reservation requirements.

Parking or booking: Book the correct service and class; check current reservation requirements.

Day 3

Montreux → Chillon or Vevey → Montreux · Local day; walking and optional train, bus or boat.

Give Lake Geneva a whole day

Choose one main outing: Château de Chillon for a castle beside the water, or Vevey for a town-based day. A lake sailing can be an alternative if its timetable works. Leave a proper lunch gap rather than joining three separately timed attractions. Chillon is the named castle option; Vevey is the alternative town outing, not an extra compulsory stop.

Overnight base: Montreux

Route advice: Boat departures and attraction tickets are separate from the GoldenPass.

Parking or booking: Boat departures and attraction tickets are separate from the GoldenPass.

Day 4

Montreux → Geneva · Allow a half-day envelope for checkout, rail and check-in.

Follow the lake towards Geneva

Travel to Geneva during daylight and make the final afternoon about the waterfront and old town. This last night puts the onward journey within easier reach and prevents an early airport transfer from swallowing the last lake evening. Choose the lakefront around the Jet d’Eau and a short old-town visit, allowing for uphill streets.

Overnight base: Geneva

Route advice: Use the SBB itinerary for the exact Geneva station and onward connection.

Parking or booking: Use the SBB itinerary for the exact Geneva station and onward connection.

Day 5

Geneva → onward connection · Allow the airline or rail operator’s required check-in margin.

Leave from Geneva

Keep breakfast and checkout simple. If your departure is late, use staffed luggage storage where available and take a short local walk. Save major timed attractions for a longer version, rather than trying to rescue them on departure day. Stay close to Cornavin if luggage and departure time limit the morning.

Overnight base: None — departure day

Route advice: Confirm the actual airport terminal or station before leaving the hotel.

Before you go

Practical information

Keep Day 3 to one destination. Stay away from station-facing rooms if announcements and train noise disturb sleep.

Pack a bag you can move comfortably, download tickets before travelling and leave room for meals between connections. Plan from the complete dated journey, including the station-to-hotel leg.

Parking

No hire car is needed for the core itinerary. If driving to your home departure station or airport, book that parking separately.

Tickets and booking

Check the GoldenPass departure and reservation arrangements first, then price the Swiss transfers and four hotel nights together. Prestige has different reservation conditions; do not assume a rail pass includes every supplement.

Seasonal considerations

May–June or September are sensible editorial choices for lake time and daylight. The train is not a guarantee that every boat or mountain attraction operates. In winter, plan a rail-and-town break and check reduced lake services.

Toilets and refreshments

Plan food and toilet stops around the larger bases and confirmed transport facilities. Carry water and a snack on travel days; a scheduled connection is not a promise of enough time to shop.

Terrain

The core route uses public transport, station approaches and town streets. Optional sightseeing can involve steps, cobbles and hills. No hiking track or compulsory mountain walk is included.

Accessibility

Ask MOB about your train and boarding assistance. Lakeside promenades offer gentler options, but hotels, boats and Château de Chillon need their own access checks.

Facilities

Use the overnight towns for shops, meals and supplies. Do not assume every small station, pier or vehicle has catering, luggage storage or an accessible toilet. Confirm the facilities you need for the actual service.

Dogs

This is not a verified pet-travel itinerary. Check every rail, ferry or bus operator, accommodation and applicable border requirement before deciding to bring a dog.

Public transport

Interlaken Ost → Zweisimmen → Montreux → Geneva. Choose the GoldenPass Express for the direct panoramic journey. Ordinary connecting services suit travellers who value flexibility; verify the full routing rather than assuming every Interlaken–Montreux result follows the scenic line.

Road conditions, tolls or permits

No self-drive section is required. Any airport, bus or taxi connection is described separately; no road toll or parking allowance is included.

Safety

Follow current operator instructions, weather notices and attraction access rules. The supplied KML is a stop planner, not navigation for mountain paths, railway property or boarding areas. Choose any optional outdoor activity for your own ability and current conditions.

Important cautions

GoldenPass Express and GoldenPass Belle Époque are different services. Select the named direct Interlaken–Montreux train if that is the experience you want.
