How long is the Kungsleden?

The trail is about 440 to 470 km (roughly 275 to 290 miles) from Abisko to Hemavan, depending on the route and boat shortcuts used.

How many days does it take?

Around 20 to 25 days is a typical plan, and a relaxed hut-to-hut pace can take three to four weeks. Many hikers walk a shorter section instead.

Where does the Kungsleden start and finish?

It starts at Abisko in the far north and finishes at Hemavan in the south. Some hikers start in the south instead, but most walk north to south.

Which is the best section?

The northern section from Abisko towards Kebnekaise is the most famous and spectacular, and it can be walked in about a week. South of Kvikkjokk the trail is quieter and more remote.

Can I climb Kebnekaise?

Yes. Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain, can be climbed from the trail near Singi or from Nikkaluokta. It is a serious mountain day, so check conditions and your fitness.

Are there bears and wolves?

Bears and wolves live in Sweden but they are very shy and very rarely seen by hikers. Moose and eagles are more likely sightings.

What about mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes and biting flies can be bad in July, so bring repellent and a head net. Late August and September usually have fewer insects.

When is the best time to hike?

The main season runs from late June to mid September. Early summer brings the midnight sun, and September brings autumn colour.

Can I camp along the way?

Camping is allowed along much of the trail under Sweden's right of public access, but there are limits in national parks such as Abisko, so check local rules and respect Sámi reindeer herding land.
