Portreath’s Hidden Gem: The Secret Tidal Pool ![]()
Tucked beside the harbour wall on the far right of Portreath Beach lies a magical little tidal pool. A local secret with a splash of history and a whole lot of charm.
Legend has it, the pool was blasted out with dynamite borrowed from nearby mines. Nearby cliffside baths were carved for Lady Frances Bassett in the 19th century.
Best Time to Visit:
Aim for 2 hours before low tide to safely access the pool and enjoy it before the sea rolls back in.
For a tranquil dip, go early morning or at sunset. Fewer crowds, golden light, and maybe even a seal sightin2g.
How to Find It:
Park at the main Portreath Beach car park.
Walk toward the harbour wall at low tide — the pool is nestled in the rocks to the far right.
Tips for Your Visit:
Bring water shoes for the rocky terrain.
Use a tide app like Magicseaweed to check timings.
Pack a towel robe and warm jumper — the Atlantic can be brisk!
For a romantic twist, try a sunset swim with LED candles (just remember to take them home!).
Dog-Friendly? Yes — but keep pups on a lead near the rocks.
Whether you’re wild swimming, rock-pooling with the kids, or just soaking up the coastal vibes, Portreath’s tidal pool is a slice of Cornish magic worth discovering.
