At a glance
Why this walking route is worth doing
The Quiraing is the Skye landscape people recognise before they know its name: broken cliffs, pointed rock formations and grassy slopes above the eastern coast. Walking the lower path gives you time inside that landscape, rather than just a photograph from the road.
This is deliberately a shorter out-and-back beneath the Needle area. It does not climb the Needle or Prison, traverse the Table, or complete the high-level circuit over Meall na Suiramach. Shorter distance does not remove the exposure: the path still demands steady footing and suitable weather.
VisitScotland highlights the Quiraing’s landslip scenery. The independent KML follows the mapped lower path from the road pass, with a turnaround below the rock formations. It measures around 3.5 km return. Choose a longer plateau circuit only with a separate plan and the experience it requires.
The path is part of the experience, not a queue of photo spots. Let others pass where there is room, keep back from edges and avoid stepping onto fragile slopes to obtain an unobstructed picture.
Where to stay
Staffin: Useful for a Trotternish stay close to the eastern approach, with the pass journey arranged separately.
Portree: A broader choice of food and accommodation for a longer Skye break; allow extra driving time.
The accommodation map is centred on Staffin. Compare your own dates, cancellation terms and the journey to the actual trailhead. Check breakfast times, parking, dog charges and somewhere to dry wet kit before booking. Booking through some links may earn Days Out Now a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Step-by-step directions
Follow the route
Join the lower Quiraing path
From the road-pass walking entrance, find the established path heading into the eastern face of the landscape. Read any current access notices and let your eyes adjust to the narrowness of the route before leaving the broad starting area.
Follow the contour beneath the cliffs
Stay on the lower mapped path as it traverses below the cliffs. Drainage channels and muddy patches can interrupt your stride; cross cautiously and avoid widening the trail onto the slope.
Pause beneath the Needle area
The turnaround is on the mapped lower path below the rock formations, rather than on a pinnacle. Enjoy the view from secure ground. The file includes no ascent of the Needle, Prison or Table.
Retrace the lower path to the pass
Return the way you came, allowing space for approaching walkers. In worsening weather, turn back earlier. A short outing with an uncomplicated return is the purpose of this version; the plateau circuit is a different walk.

Before you go
Practical information
Route checked against mapped paths on 2 October 2026. This out and back measures approximately 3.5 km along the supplied OpenStreetMap line. It does not include travel from your accommodation, optional detours or time spent at attractions. Walking time is a planning estimate, with room for short stops.
Download the file before leaving and use it with a detailed offline walking map. The KML is independently assembled from OpenStreetMap paths, rather than a recorded walk or a route copied from another travel publisher. It has been checked for continuous mapped segments; this is not an on-foot condition survey. Current closures, landowner notices and signed diversions take priority.

Parking
Use the designated Quiraing pass car park on the Staffin–Uig road. Pay any displayed charge and keep the narrow road and passing places clear. The line begins at the walking entrance across the pass area, not at every parking space.
Tickets and booking
No attraction entry ticket is part of this walk; parking may be charged. The route is a footpath outing, not an organised tour or a ticket to climb the rock formations.
Seasonal considerations
Choose clear visibility and light winds. Avoid the trail in strong wind, poor visibility or when saturated ground makes the exposed sections uncomfortable. Skye rain can change the ground quickly.
Toilets and refreshments
Do not rely on toilets, drinking water or a café at the pass. Make a facilities stop in Staffin or Uig and carry everything for the walk.
Terrain
Uneven, often muddy path beneath steep cliffs, with narrow exposed stretches and small drainage crossings. The return repeats the same surfaces. There is no engineered level promenade.
Accessibility
Unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Anyone uncomfortable with narrow paths beside steep slopes should choose a roadside viewpoint rather than attempt the trail.
Dogs
Keep dogs controlled and on a lead near sheep and exposed ground. A dog pulling sideways on a narrow muddy path can make footing harder for its owner too.
Public transport
No direct scheduled bus to the pass has been verified for this route. A bus to Staffin or Uig does not remove the steep road connection. Arrange a taxi or a transfer with an agreed collection time if travelling without a car.
Road conditions, tolls or permits
Use the exact start coordinates to locate the walking entrance. Follow current local parking, access-road and signed restriction information.
Safety
Do not climb the Needle or Prison from this line, and do not make informal shortcuts up the landslip. Turn around at the mapped lower-path endpoint; continue only under a separately researched mountain plan.

Useful answers
Quiraing Walk: A Shorter Route Beneath the Needle FAQs
Is this the full Quiraing loop?
No. It is about 3.5 km out and back on the lower path. The upper plateau and full circuit are excluded.
Does the KML climb the Needle?
No. The name identifies the view and area, not a climb onto the rock formation.
Is it suitable for children?
That depends on their experience and comfort with narrow exposed paths. Distance alone is not a useful safety test; close supervision is essential.
Can I do it in fog?
Poor visibility makes both navigation and cliff judgement harder. Choose another outing if you cannot see and follow the path confidently.
Can I arrive by bus?
A direct service to the pass has not been verified. Arrange the final journey and collection before setting out.
Can I use the KML in a walking app?
Import it into an app that supports KML, or into your own map project. Check that the whole route is visible after importing. Download the underlying map for offline use too: a line without terrain, paths and place names is a poor navigation aid.
