Why this road trip is worth doing

The Middle Rhine gives you castles above the river, railway stations beside it and small towns where an evening stop can be more rewarding than another hour of driving. This three-day plan follows the west-bank sequence from Koblenz to Bingen, using Boppard, St Goar and Bacharach along the way.

The road file avoids making a river ferry an essential connection. Castle interiors and uphill approaches are optional side visits. Pick one substantial castle visit and build the day around its opening rather than treating every ruin on the skyline as a place you can enter.

A car is a choice, not the only way

The river railway provides a useful alternative for a reduced itinerary. If tasting wine is a priority, use rail, walking or a booked transfer for that part of the day.

Book the castle you actually want

A river view and castle admission are different experiences. Check seasonal opening, guided-tour requirements and the climb from your parking point before deciding how many visits fit.

About the downloadable route

The supplied line measures approximately 65.0 km. The road line was independently calculated with OSRM on the FOSSGIS service from OpenStreetMap data. It follows mapped roads between the named approach points; it does not include every car park, attraction entrance or side trip. Driving time is a planning estimate before stops, traffic and closures. Recalculate navigation on the day; local restrictions override the file. Route itinerary

Build the journey day by day

Day 1

Koblenz and Boppard

Start with a town and riverfront visit in Koblenz, then continue to Boppard. Check the visitor offer before adding a lift or hillside activity; none is required to complete the road route. Stay by the river if an evening meal is part of the appeal.

Day 2

St Goar and one castle visit

Drive south and make room for one chosen castle or museum visit after checking its access. Allow time for the climb or local transfer. Keep the afternoon for the riverfront rather than rushing into another paid interior.

Day 3

Bacharach and Bingen

Spend time in Bacharach’s streets, then follow the west-bank sequence to Bingen. Finish with a meal or riverfront stop if open and suitable. An opposite-bank viewpoint or ferry crossing is a separately planned extension.

Before you go

Practical information

Parking

Use formal town parking and independently check any castle approach. The KML stays on public roads; a riverfront waypoint is not permission to stop in a loading or restricted area.

Tickets and booking

Castle interiors, cable or chair lifts, river boats and tastings have separate costs and conditions. Check each chosen operator before paying for an accommodation stay built around it.

Seasonal considerations

Spring to autumn suits longer outdoor stops. Castle and boat schedules reduce outside the main season, and river conditions can affect sailings.

Toilets and refreshments

Use town meal stops and confirm opening outside the main season. Public toilets vary by town; plan a break before an uphill visit.

Terrain

Driving between stops; individual visits add uneven paths, steps and weather exposure.

Accessibility

Historic streets, hilltop castles and railway access differ. Choose a confirmed accessible town-based visit if steep paths or interior stairs are unsuitable.

Dogs

Check your chosen transport, accommodation and attraction rules before bringing a dog.

Public transport

Koblenz and the west-bank towns offer rail alternatives. Check the actual timetable and station-to-accommodation access; boat departures are seasonal and separate from the road route.

Road conditions, tolls or permits

Mostly west-bank connecting roads, including the B9 corridor where routed. Town congestion and railway-side junctions require patience; there is no essential ferry leg in the supplied file.

Safety

Never drive after tasting alcohol. Keep away from river edges and follow hillside closures. Do not cross railway tracks except at authorised crossings.
