At a glance

Why this walking route is worth doing

This Rydal Water walk links two lakes, woodland and Rydal Cave, with the option to spend longer in Grasmere or at the gardens around Rydal. It is a six-mile outing rather than a short lap of Rydal Water.

Start and finish at White Moss, and allow extra time for any village, cave or garden stops. The stage descriptions below are an overview, not a junction-by-junction navigation sheet: keep the mapped route and a detailed walking map with you.

Walk anti-clockwise from White Moss through woodland to Grasmere, follow the lakeside towards Rydal Water, visit Rydal Cave and Rydal Mount, then return beside the River Rothay.

Step-by-step directions

Follow the route

01

White Moss and River Rothay · Opening woodland section

White Moss Car Park to the River Rothay

Begin at White Moss, following the well-marked paths through peaceful woodland and across the River Rothay. This area is beautiful year-round, with birdsong, mossy trees and glimpses of both lakes.

02

Grasmere lakeshore and village · Lakeside section

Grasmere lakeshore to Grasmere village

Follow the shoreline path towards Grasmere village. The views across the lake are some of the best in the area, with calm water, surrounding fells and reflections on still days.

Route advice: Optional detour: stop at the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, a tiny historic bakery famous for its gingerbread recipe dating back to 1854.

03

Grasmere and Rydal Water · Linking trail

Grasmere to the Rydal Water lakeside path

Continue the loop south, joining the trail that runs between the two lakes. This section is peaceful and scenic, with gentle undulating paths and plenty of places to pause for a drink or snack.

04

Rydal Cave · Short rocky approach

Explore Rydal Cave

Rydal Cave is a huge man-made cavern with stepping stones across a shallow pool inside. Light through the entrance creates an atmospheric place for photographs and a short rest.

Parking or booking: Take care on wet rock and do not enter if conditions make the stepping stones unsafe.

05

Rydal Mount, Rydal Hall and The Grot · Historic and waterfall section

Rydal Mount and gardens

From the cave, follow the path towards Rydal Mount, the former home of William Wordsworth. Nearby highlights include Rydal Hall Gardens, The Grot waterfall viewpoint and stepping stones across the River Rothay.

Route advice: The Grot at Rydal Hall is worth a stop for its framed view of the waterfall. The estate says its gardens open daily throughout the year, with The Grot open during daylight hours. Entry is free, with donations welcomed. Keep dogs on a lead throughout the grounds; swimming is not permitted in The Grot area. Rydal Mount is a separate property: check its current visitor arrangements before making a house or garden visit part of your plan.

06

River Rothay and White Moss · Final riverside section

Return to White Moss Car Park

Follow the riverside path back towards White Moss. This final stretch is flat, relaxing and a gentle way to finish the loop.

Seasonal considerations

The route is attractive year-round, but daylight, weather, path conditions and parking pressure vary. Start early on busy weekends and check the forecast.

Toilets and refreshments

Toilets at White Moss and in Grasmere village. Grasmere has cafés, shops and food stops.

Terrain

Lakeside paths, woodland trails, gentle climbs and some rocky ground near Rydal Cave

Accessibility

The full circuit is not a step-free walk: woodland paths, uneven ground and the rocky cave approach create barriers. For a shorter alternative, look at the National Park’s White Moss Common to Steps End route, graded Miles without Stiles “for some”. That route still includes steep sections and shallow fords, so read its access notes against your own needs. It is a separate out-and-back option, not an accessible version of this entire circuit.

Facilities

Toilets at White Moss and in Grasmere village; cafés, shops and refreshments are available in Grasmere

Dogs

Keep dogs under close control around livestock, roads, water and busy paths. At Rydal Hall, the estate requires dogs to be on a lead throughout the grounds.

Public transport

The National Park lists buses 555 and 599 serving White Moss along the A591. Check the current timetable, the stop for your direction of travel and your return service before leaving; do not assume both services run the same route or timetable.

Safety

Wear suitable footwear, carry water and layers, and use the live route alongside an appropriate map. Conditions and access can change.

Important cautions

Paths can be muddy and slippery after rain. Take care around water, wet rock and the stepping stones inside Rydal Cave.
