At a glance
Why this walking route is worth doing
The Seven Hanging Valleys route is the Algarve day to choose when you want to see the limestone coast from above rather than spend every hour on one beach. The path links bays and headlands between Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha, with repeated dips and climbs along the way.
This file runs west to east, one way. Arrange the journey back before starting. It stays on walking paths above the coast and does not enter Benagil Cave, descend into sea caves or turn a coastal walk into an unplanned swim.
A one-way walk needs a return plan
The local parish describes the official route as linear and gives 11.2 km for an out-and-back. Our mapped one-way variant measures approximately 5.7 km. A taxi or pre-arranged lift between the two walking entrances can make this a more relaxed day than walking both directions, but availability is not guaranteed at the moment you finish.
Choose the season against the conditions
The local authority recommends spring and autumn, avoiding very hot, rainy or windy days. Much of the path is exposed to sun. Carry enough water from the beginning, wear shoes with grip and do not treat a restaurant symbol on a map as a dependable open refill stop. Warm weather and clear photographs do not prove that cliff edges are stable.
About the route file
The supplied one way line measures approximately 5.7 km. Walking time is an estimate for suitable conditions, including short stops. The KML was independently assembled from adjacent OpenStreetMap paths on 3 October 2026; it is not a recorded or field-walked track. Import it into an app that supports KML and download a detailed offline map as well. Current closures, permissions and signed diversions take priority. © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0.
Where to base yourself
Carvoeiro: A useful base for the western start, with a final taxi or drive still to arrange. Lagoa: An inland base that can work for several Algarve outings if you have suitable transport. Step-by-step directions
Follow the route
Begin above Vale Centeanes
Find the upper walking entrance above Praia de Vale Centeanes. Join the coast path heading east rather than descending onto the beach and looking for a route along the water.
Follow the headlands towards Carvalho
Remain on the marked walking line over the intervening headlands and valleys. Short beach-access paths are not the main route. Use the map at junctions and stay clear of cliff-edge shortcuts.
Pass the Benagil area on foot
Follow the established steps, street connections and coastal walking paths through the Benagil area. Take care where the route meets vehicle access. This stage passes the coastal settlement; it is not a route into the cave.
Finish above Praia da Marinha
Continue east on the signed path to the upper Praia da Marinha approach. Finish at the walking entrance shown in the file, then use your arranged transfer. A beach visit adds separate steps and time, so only include it if conditions and daylight permit.

Before you go
Practical information
Parking
Use authorised parking near your chosen entrance and check current capacity and restrictions. If you leave a car at the start, book a return journey from Praia da Marinha. Do not block narrow access roads or beach emergency access.
Tickets and booking
The outdoor walk is separate from paid boat trips and other attractions. Do not buy a cave activity assuming it is included or accessible from the walking path.
Seasonal considerations
Spring or autumn can suit the walk. Avoid very hot conditions, rain, strong wind or a storm forecast. Start with enough daylight for the full route and your transfer.
Toilets and refreshments
Carry water, sun protection and food. Refreshments near the bays depend on the date and opening hours. There are no guaranteed facilities at every valley.
Terrain
Earth and rock paths, uneven limestone, steps, repeated rises and short street or road sections around access points. Several areas are exposed to cliff drops.
Accessibility
Not a step-free beach promenade. Use a confirmed accessible viewpoint separately if rough paths and stairs are unsuitable.
Facilities
Use the official visitor and operator links below for current facilities and opening arrangements.
Dogs
Keep dogs close and controlled beside cliffs. Bring water and avoid hot ground; check beach and taxi rules separately.
Public transport
Carvoeiro and Lagoa are useful wider bases. Confirm a taxi, lift or usable current bus connection for both trailheads. The KML contains no transfer leg, and this guide does not promise a frequent trailhead-to-trailhead bus.
Road conditions, tolls or permits
Choose a base against your arrival transport. Check parking arrangements before bringing a car.
Safety
Use established marked paths, keep clear of cliff edges and fenced sinkholes, and obey diversions. Do not climb barriers, enter caves from above or descend to an isolated beach. No swimming access to Benagil Cave is part of this plan.

Useful answers
Seven Hanging Valleys Walk: The Algarve Coast Beyond the Beach FAQs
How far is the walk?
The supplied west-to-east route is approximately 5.7 km one way. Walking back makes roughly twice that distance before extra beach detours.
Can I enter Benagil Cave on this route?
No. It is a cliff-top walking route. Cave access and water-based activities have separate rules and risks.
Can I walk it in sandals?
Uneven limestone and steps call for walking shoes with grip, not beach footwear.
Is a bus return included?
No. Arrange your return independently and verify any current service before setting off.
