Choose the Yorkshire Dales for walking and villages, Whitby and the coast for seaside scenery, York for history and an easy car-free break, or the North York Moors for quieter landscapes and heritage towns. Two nearby areas can work together; opposite corners usually need a longer trip.

Two nights gives you one strong base and two worthwhile days. Three or four nights creates room for a major walk, a scenic drive and a slower town or coast day without turning the holiday into a race.

Not for York, and some coastal or rail-based breaks can work without one. A car gives greater flexibility across the Dales and moors, but parking fills early at famous walks. Always check current bus and train times if travelling without a car.
