Why go
Why Amsterdam works for a Christmas date night
Amsterdam is compact and flat, so two nights never feels rushed. The train from Schiphol reaches Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 minutes, which means you can drop your bags and be walking along the canals before the lights come on.
Winter is when the city is at its most atmospheric. The Amsterdam Light Festival turns the historic centre into an open-air gallery after dark, the canal houses glow, and a traditional brown café feels exactly right when it’s cold outside.
One honest note: Amsterdam isn’t a big German-style Christmas market city. Its markets are small, so treat them as a bonus. The real draws are the canals, the lights, the food and a drink on the water.

Romantic things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas
- A canal cruise with drinksSeveral operators run cruises with drinks included. Stromma, for example, lists cheese-and-wine, Aperol Spritz and cocktail cruises. Compare prosecco canal cruises and wine-and-cheese cruises on GetYourGuide, and check whether the boat is covered and heated for December.
- Amsterdam Light FestivalThe 15th edition runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. The official festival site says the lights are on daily from 4.30pm to 11pm (9pm on 31 December). Walk the 4.5km route, all of it or in sections, or see it from the water on a 75-minute cruise. Compare Light Festival cruises.
- Christmas markets and ice rinksSkate together on the Museumplein ice rink by the Rijksmuseum, then browse the small seasonal markets dotted around the city. Dates are below, and the full I amsterdam Christmas market list is in Dutch.
- The Nine StreetsDe Negen Straatjes are nine little parallel streets in the canal ring behind the Royal Palace. They’re popular for shopping, brunch and coffee, and the bridges between them make a lovely slow afternoon wander.
- The JordaanOnce a working-class neighbourhood, the Jordaan is now full of galleries, concept stores, vintage shops and restaurants along quieter canals. It’s the best area for a long dinner and a nightcap. Food lovers can try a Jordaan food tour.
- Drinks with a viewFor a drink above the rooftops, A’DAM Lookout is a tower across the IJ in Amsterdam Noord, a short ferry ride from behind Centraal station. Check opening times and whether you need a ticket before you go. A’DAM Lookout tickets.

Travel
Getting to Amsterdam from the UK
Flying to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
Amsterdam Schiphol is one of the easiest European airports to reach from the UK. There are direct flights from the London airports and from a range of regional airports. Routes and airlines change with the seasons, so the quickest way to see what flies direct from your nearest airport is a KAYAK search from Manchester to Amsterdam. It uses example dates of 11 to 13 December 2026, so change them to suit and swap in your own airport.
What flights cost: when we checked on 13 October 2026, easyJet return fares for a late-November weekend started at about £90 per person from Bristol (29 November to 4 December) and £92 from Manchester (29 November to 1 December), with London to Amsterdam from about £92 return between Christmas and New Year, in time for the Light Festival. Fares move daily and bags cost extra, so compare today’s price on KAYAK and change the dates to suit.
By train: Eurostar from London
Direct Eurostar trains run from London St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal in about four hours. Eurostar’s current timetable shows journeys of roughly 4 hours to 4 hours 20 minutes. On a typical weekday there are five direct departures from London, with fewer at weekends. Eurostar lists one-way Standard fares from £39, subject to availability.
You arrive right in the centre, and many hotels are walkable from Centraal. Remember that Amsterdam is one hour ahead of the UK.
Schiphol to the city centre
The train is the easiest option. NS (Dutch Railways) says the trip to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 17 minutes, and Sprinter trains alone run eight times an hour.
According to Schiphol, you can simply tap a contactless bank card or phone at the start and end of your journey. Ticket machines are in the arrivals halls and at Schiphol Plaza. NS listed a full-fare single at €5.20 for 2025, so check today’s fare. Don’t forget to tap out at the gates at Centraal.
Getting around: GVB tickets and the I amsterdam City Card
Central Amsterdam is very walkable, so you may only need the odd tram. Trams, buses, metro and ferries are run by GVB, which sells hourly and multi-day tickets. The Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket covers buses, trams, trains and metro across the wider area, which is useful if you’re also planning day trips.
The I amsterdam City Card bundles public transport with entry to a list of museums and attractions. It only pays off if you’ll visit several of the included places in a short time, so check the current list and price before you buy. You can compare City Card options on GetYourGuide or on the I amsterdam website.
You won’t need a car in the city. Car hire only makes sense if you’re adding countryside day trips.
Plan
A two-night Amsterdam date night plan
Day 1 (Friday): arrive and see the lights
- Afternoon: Take the train from Schiphol or arrive on the Eurostar, check in, then wander through the Nine Streets for coffee and a browse.
- From 4.30pm: The Light Festival switches on. Walk a section of the route, or take a 75-minute cruise. Stromma’s Light Festival cruises leave from the Central Station Bridge and Damrak, and include a closed, heated boat option.
- Evening: Have dinner in the Jordaan, then finish with a drink in a brown café.
Day 2 (Saturday): art, ice and a drinks cruise
- Morning: Visit the Rijksmuseum with tickets booked in advance, then head out onto Museumplein for the ice rink and, if it’s running, the Christmas Village.
- Afternoon: Slow down. Stroll the Jordaan’s canals and shops, and stop for Dutch apple pie and coffee when your fingers get cold.
- Early evening: Take your drinks cruise, either prosecco or wine and cheese. The canals look their best after dark.
- Late: Go for a special dinner, or drinks with a view at A’DAM Lookout (check its hours first).
Day 3 (Sunday): brunch and home
- Morning: Have a long brunch in the Nine Streets or the Jordaan. If the Funky Xmas Market at Westergas falls on your weekend, it’s a short walk from the Jordaan.
- Afternoon: Take one last canal walk, then head back. Leave plenty of time for airport security, or for Eurostar check-in and passport checks at Centraal.

Money-saving tips
- Walk the Light Festival. The festival says you don’t need a ticket to see the artworks, and its app is free to download. The paid Light Walk adds an audio guide and the route map. It was listed at €7.99, so check today’s price on the festival FAQ.
- Book one boat, not two. If you want both a drinks cruise and the Light Festival from the water, check whether any Light Festival cruises on your dates include a drink.
- Tap, don’t queue. Use a contactless card or phone on the Schiphol train instead of buying tickets, and only buy a City Card if you’ll really use it.
- Book the Eurostar early. Fares go up as trains fill, and pre-Christmas weekends are popular.
- Try different nights. Hotel prices often jump on Friday and Saturday nights in December. Compare a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay; the lights are on every evening.
- Travel light. Two nights fits in hand luggage, which keeps flight costs down and gets you out of Schiphol faster.
Good to know
Amsterdam Christmas break FAQ
When is the Amsterdam Light Festival 2026-27?
From Thursday 26 November 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027. The official site lists the lights as on daily from 4.30pm to 11pm, closing at 9pm on 31 December. Times can change, so check the dates and hours page before you go.
What do we need to travel from the UK?
A British passport issued less than 10 years before you arrive, with at least three months left after the day you leave. The EU’s Entry/Exit System is being rolled out, so you may need to give fingerprints and a photo at the border; allow extra time. Check the FCDO entry requirements before you travel.
What’s open over Christmas?
Many shops close early on Christmas Eve and most are shut on Christmas Day, while many attractions stay open. If your trip falls between 24 and 26 December, check the opening hours of anywhere you want to visit and book restaurants ahead.
Is Amsterdam safe for a night out?
Generally yes, but the FCDO warns that pickpocketing is common in central Amsterdam and around Centraal station. Cycle paths are busy and fast, so look both ways before stepping off the pavement. Take care near the canals after a few drinks, and be wary of anyone posing as plain-clothes police who asks to see your cash or cards.
Do we need cash?
Cards and phone payments are widely used, but some places in the Netherlands don’t take credit cards. Carry a debit card that works abroad, and a few euros in small notes for market stalls.
